Life was tough last year. It’s taken awhile for things to settle, well, as much as they can be after a major loss. I think I have finally got my bearings straightened out enough to get back into the kitchen. So, I thought it would be a good time to introduce you to my idea of sharing my love of food with you, with: Mama TC’s Kitchen!

Where does the name come from? Well, first, I’m a mom, but I prefer the term ‘Mama’. Using this spelling also alludes to the British way of saying it, and, I love that! (big Jane Austen fan here)

As far as the ‘TC’ part, that comes from my childhood nickname. From what I recall, one of my little sisters had a hard time saying my name and it came out sounding like ‘tee cee’. It stuck, and I was branded for life! (also a big fan of spontaneous drama)

The ‘Kitchen’ part, I hope, is self explanatory. Although I do a lot of cooking on the grill, ‘Mama TC’s Grill’ had too much of an urban, dental work feel, (and I know nothing of urban dentistry…nor am I a fan) and I was going more for the ‘welcome to my kitchen, make yourself at home & let’s talk about food’ kind of angle. I think this works.

So, here are a few things you should know about me, as it relates to the topic of food in general:

1. I LOVE FOOD.

2. I LOVE TO MAKE FOOD.

3. I LOVE TO SMELL FOOD.

4. I LOVE TO EAT FOOD.

5. I LOVE TO SEE FOOD.

6. I LOVE TO TASTE FOOD.

7. I LOVE TO CHEW FOOD.

8. I LOVE TO PHOTOGRAPH FOOD.

9. I LOVE TO TALK ABOUT FOOD.

10. FOOD, FOOD, FOOD.

Ok, that last one was just the word, but I had to make it an even 10. (big fan of MONK too)

I figured there must be others out there that feel the same or similarly, as far as food is concerned, as I do. And if you’re like me you also like to find recipes and try them out. You may even be a LOT like me if you have many, many cookbooks at your disposal, ready to peruse on a whim for that one thing or idea you haven’t tried yet. And if you’re really, really, REALLY like me…you like to EXPERIMENT.

Oh yes, now we’re talkin’!

Since I’m finally breaking out of my shell a bit to share more of who I am and what makes me tick, I thought this would be a great topic to expound on. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram (traciveek) you have surely seen me show off my food, talk about food, like other people’s photos of food, etc. The thing I LOVE the most is to take a recipe that everyone makes and turn it upside down, to break the rules and see what happens. My natural bent is to redefine ‘the box’, to question ‘why?’ and to say ‘why not?’, and in fact, I usually don’t even see a box. It’s more like a trapezoidal, rhombused parallelo-octagon…thing.

And rainbows.

(Ok, I just added that cause it seemed like a good place to mention rainbows.)

Anyhoo, I wanted to let you know that I am working on some of my favorite recipes to share with you! I’ve tried this before, but I somehow keep losing my handy-dandy notebooks I started in order to  keep track of everything. (Sadness. :( )I am still on the hunt to find them, I put a lot of effort into them and would like to be able to keep it for my daughter one day. You see, the way I cook, totally off the cuff, all my recipes are in my head. Yeah. And I never measure anything. So up until oh, last year or so(?), I had never actually seen any of my recipes written out, because I just make them up as I go along and well, it’s not so easy to pass along recipes that way. And now that I lost another notebook, I have to start over. From scratch. (HUGE fan of puns)

Side Note: Now, over the years, my daughter has been by my side in the kitchen, watching and learning from her mama. I firmly believe kids should be in the kitchen with their mamas. It’s a life skill that is so important as kids grow in order to take care of themselves and eventually their own families. So, she knows a lot of the things I do, but I want her to know EXACTLY what I do. I want her to be a great mama, to have her children beside her in her kitchen one day, and well, she’ll need to know all of HER mama’s secrets! Plus, how amazing would it be to know my daughter is telling her children, “When I was a little girl, I would help my mama in the kitchen…”? THAT’S a part of the legacy I want to leave behind.(A few friends of mine have a great website I love along these lines, check out Raising Homemakers)

So, be on the lookout for some upcoming recipes! I’m not sure how frequent I’ll post them yet, I’m still working out a schedule for that but I’ll most likely give a head’s up on Twitter or Facebook, so come follow me! Also, I’d love to hear what you think about food, recipes, cooking and baking so please, feel free to chime in!
