This is my feeble attempt to write a letter from the perspective of a sponsored child. I feel very inadequate and don’t want to dishonor or falsely dramatize what these children and their families go through. The truth is, there are children living in such poverty we can barely imagine what it must be like to go through. Even if we ever get a chance to visit, we get to go home, depravity and devastation ARE their home. I don’t pretend to know what a child would say to me, so I’m assuming it would be something like this…

“Dear Family,

I hope you are all happy today. It was so nice to get your last letter. It makes me smile to read about how you are doing. I want to thank you for all of your help. I got a new pair of shoes. They feel strange on my feet. I’ve never had shoes before. My little brother tried to wear them around but he fell because they were too big. It was very funny and we all laughed. It has been a long time since our family has had something to cheer us up. It is because of you that we can laugh again. Thank you for this gift.

My little sister is growing and I have been taking care of her when mother goes to the market. I help cook and clean and take care of my brother and sister when she is away. She is looking for work so we can keep our home. I like to eat mangoes. Do you like mangoes? Do you have mangoes where you are? They are everywhere here. Everyone eats mangoes. Sometimes, I eat too many mangoes and I don’t like them again, but then I remember there are people who don’t have mangoes to eat and I thank God for giving us mangoes.

I thank you again and again for your help. It makes a big change for my family after my father left to find work. He has not returned yet, but we are praying he finds work to send money home to us. Will you please pray for him? He gets sad and it makes my mother sad too. I do not like seeing them sad. Life can be very hard. Is life hard for you?

Thank you for writing. I will write again to you. Please write again to me. May God bless you and your family.”

Have you heard of Compassion? Did you know their slogan is “Releasing Children from Poverty, in Jesus’ Name”? How awesome is that?!

Could you take a few moments to hop over to Compassion’s website to pray for these little ones? To ask the Lord if He wants you to sponsor one of them? To at least see what they’re about, what they’re in the business of doing? I think that would be fantastic and wonderful! Thank you, in advance, for taking a step toward reaching out to the least of these, even if it starts as a prayer. It ALL counts!

I also want to let you know that because my heart breaks for these little ones and aches to see them free in Jesus’ name, I have decided to join the team of Compassion Bloggers! I am so thrilled to my toes about it! Will you help me spread the word about the great things they are doing? Will you come back and read about my journey as I share with you?
